Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy

What Is PRP Therapy?

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy is a treatment that uses your own blood to promote healing and tissue regeneration. PRP is made by drawing a small amount of your blood, spinning it in a centrifuge to concentrate the platelets, and injecting this rich plasma into areas of injury or concern.

How Does PRP Work? (Mechanism of Action)

Platelets are blood components that help with clotting and wound healing. They also contain growth factors and proteins that aid in tissue repair.

When PRP is injected into injured or degenerated tissue, the concentrated platelets:

  • Release growth factors
  • Stimulate cell regeneration
  • Promote collagen production
  • Enhance blood flow
  • Support healing of tendons, ligaments, muscles, and skin

This process jumpstarts and enhances the body’s natural healing response.

What Is PRP Used For?

PRP has a range of medical and cosmetic uses:

Orthopedic and Musculoskeletal Conditions:

  • Tendon injuries (e.g., tennis elbow, Achilles tendinopathy)
  • Ligament sprains
  • Muscle injuries
  • Joint osteoarthritis (especially knee, hip, and shoulder)
  • Rotator cuff injuries

Dermatology and Aesthetic Medicine:

  • Hair restoration for androgenic alopecia (hair thinning)
  • Skin rejuvenation (“vampire facial”)
  • Acne scars and stretch marks

Injection Site Options:

  • Joints (knee, hip, shoulder)
  • Tendons and ligaments
  • Scalp (for hair loss)
  • Facial skin (for cosmetic use)
  • Muscles (depending on injury)

Contraindications to PRP Therapy

PRP is generally safe because it uses your own blood, but it may not be suitable for everyone. You should not receive PRP therapy if you have:

  • Active infection at the injection site
  • Low platelet count (thrombocytopenia)
  • Bleeding or clotting disorders
  • Severe anemia
  • Cancer (especially blood cancers)
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding (in some cases)
  • Autoimmune diseases (with caution – discuss with provider)
  • Use of blood thinners (may require pausing under supervision)

What to Expect After PRP Injection

Immediately After Injection:

  • Mild pain, swelling, or stiffness is common
  • Temporary increase in inflammation (a healing response)
  • Limit strenuous activity for a few days

When Will You See Results?

  • Results are not immediate
  • Most patients begin to notice improvement within 2–6 weeks
  • Full benefits typically occur by 3–6 months

How Many Injections Are Needed?

  • Typically, 1–3 injections spaced 4–6 weeks apart
  • Some chronic conditions may require a series of treatments
